Facial massage is an incredibly powerful treatment… as long as you avoid certain traps. Here are the 6 most common mistakes I see in the treatment room, and how to fix them.
1. Skipping the assessment
This is mistake number one. Jumping straight into the protocol means missing the essentials: every face tells a story. Jaw tension, a tight forehead, puffiness… Take the time to observe and touch before you begin.
2. The wrong pressure
Too light, and the massage doesn't reach deep tension. Too firm, and it creates discomfort and blocks relaxation. The right pressure evolves throughout the treatment: firmer on areas of tension, more enveloping on sensitive areas.
3. A pace that's too fast
In the treatment room, we tend to speed up to "fit everything in." But relaxation is born of slowness. A slow, steady pace sends the nervous system a signal of safety — and that's where the magic happens.
4. Forgetting the neck and nape
The face doesn't stop at the chin. A large part of facial tension comes from the neck, the trapezius muscles and the jaw. Neglecting these areas means giving up half the results.
5. Ignoring the breath
Your client's breathing is your best indicator. Short breathing signals stress; deep, full breathing signals release. Guide her: a few deep breaths at the start of the treatment change everything.
6. Rushing the end of the treatment
The final minutes are the ones your client remembers. An abrupt ending undoes all the relaxation work. Finish gently, allow a moment of rest, and accompany the return to reality.
A good facial massage isn't measured by the complexity of the movements, but by the quality of presence and adaptation.
How to progress
Fixing these mistakes mostly requires a methodical framework: assessment, adaptation, pace, breathing. That's the whole logic of the ORA Restore & Reconnect method.
